Throughout my life I have been passionately concerned with the human condition, its evolving relationship to the natural world and how this relationship is expressed in architecture and design. I have sought in my endeavors to gain an ever-deepening insight into the nature of dwelling and the way in which materials are brought together in such a way so as to bestow meaning and significance to the human experience. Design has the potential to awaken the individual to the nature of reality as well as to delude, shield and separate them from the elements that constitute the body of our world.  As an architect and designer I have sought to restore a faith in nature and an uplifting of humanity.

I have recently retired from working as a New York City Firefighter. I had been working in this capacity for 15 years in Lower Manhattan. This has given me an unparalleled scope of experiences that have allowed me to witness the breadth of life and death and the full range within. It has allowed me to understand the broad capacity of human dwelling and the nature and potential of architecture and design to impact people. It is and has always been the highest aspiration of architecture to cultivate qualities within the individual. To organize materials in such a way so as to give voice to the desire that resides within all people to live meaningful and wonderful lives.

I began my teaching career at an after school program at the Gloria Parks Community Center in Buffalo, New York. I started the program after I had read an article about how Chess had numerous benefits for children and how it helped them to develop deep thinking abilities at an early age. It was an amazing experience to see the enthusiasm and happiness that teaching the children had on them. It seemed that each week there were more and more children coming to play and learn about chess. It is a deeply rewarding and meaningful endeavor to help other people advance towards their goals and I felt I had found something I could do for the rest of my life. Shortly after that, while working on my Masters Degree in Architecture, I had the opportunity to become the Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Structures 1, 2, and 3 sequence at S.U.N.Y. Buffalo, School of Architecture, under Professor Shahin Vassigh. I learned so much from working with Professor Vassigh about creating exciting and challenging assignments and projects for the students to work on. I knew for certain that I loved teaching and hoped I would have the opportunity to do it for the rest of my life.

My love for teaching has enriched my life and it is one of the most meaningful experiences I have had. I have taught 115 courses over 40 semesters at 5 distinguished institutions. My students have won awards year after year for their work and I am so proud to have helped each of them move in the direction of their goals and aspirations. I have consistently, semester after semester, year after year been the highest rated or among the highest rated professors in my department and very frequently across departments. Please find below the list of courses I have taught and the respective institutions I have had the privilege to teach at. I also have many years of course evaluations that I am more than happy to review with you. I am extremely proud of them as they are a testament to my commitment to teaching and the advancement of Design.

I have been working as an Adjunct Professor at different institutions for several years. My professional teaching experience spans over 115 courses, taught over 40 semesters at several schools of architecture and design in New York and Massachusetts. The depth and range of my teaching experience has allowed me to understand the process of education in new ways. I have gained a deep respect for the ability to communicate with sympathy and authenticity.

I have also worked as an architect at several architectural offices throughout New York City. In this process I have developed my ability to create designs that meet the needs of clients and improve the quality of the environment. These extraordinary experiences have granted me a refined focus on the relationship between the human condition and the natural world.

Most recently, I have completed the design and construction of the United Nations Food Gardens at UN Headquarters in New York City. This project sought to sustainably establish several small-scale food gardens within the UN Campus for UN Delegates and Staff to come together around to build greater connections between people from around the world by growing food together and sharing knowledge and skills. Our ever-deepening environmental crisis demands that we cherish materials and apply our most creative minds in the effort to restore a balance to our world. A progressive evolution of humanity suggests an adaptation to existing circumstance. This is why I have chosen this path and to take up the challenge of our future. Thank you for your consideration.

With My Deepest Respects,                                                                                   William F. Gates

The Arc-Angle Multi Purpose Drawing Tool – The Arc-Angle is an original idea that I had parented. It serves to enhance the capability of the traditionally used 30,60,90 and 45,45,90 architectural drawing triangles.
